Seen as very much the ‘missing link’ in the ‘Powering Britain’ range, the 16 ton mineral wagon is an essential addition to the Accurascale range to tell the story of coal traffic on the railways throughout the 20th century. The archetypal BR 16 ton all-steel non-hoppered mineral wagon proliferated across the United Kingdom’s railway network during the 1950s and 1960s and there was probably not a siding, freight yard or industrial railway system in the country that did not house at least an example or three of these vitally important, yet mundane railway vehicles.

Great set of wagons will get more and get rid of my Bachmann models, I am looking forward to a model of the Coal16VB

16T Mineral

Great model of the ubiquitous coal wagon that was so much part of everyday scenery of the whole British Railways network.

Black Diamonds!

For over 20 years the Bachmann 16 tonners was the go to if you wanted a decent fleet of these and didn't fancy a massive kitbuilding effort. I've done both!
The announcement of Accurascale's was unexpected and though I was pretty happy with my previous models, I was massively impressed by the sharpness of this new version. There are a number of detail differences in the four sets I purchased from pressed/ fabricated end doors to riveted panels. The brake gear is simple and also more delicate in appearance than previous incarnations of the type. The wheels also make a huge difference, being much finer and better looking than the pizza cutters used by others. Another thing I like, although common to all AS releases now, is the link coupling option, since I'm not the biggest fan of tension looks. Another improvement I noticed is in the slightly darker and more correct shade of freight grey used this time, compared with the over pale version used on the MDOs, where there was little contrast with the white end door stripe, so top marks for addressing that. All in all I'm very pleased with these and will probably buy more as time goes on. A bread and butter model for the pre-sector BR era and one that is guaranteed to keep on selling.

Delightful models

I am extremely pleased with this little rake of 16 ton mineral wagons. It was well worth the wait as I pre-ordered a while ago. Having prepaid too, it was like getting a gift through the post.
My layout is very compact but recently extended and these wagons have their own siding which will be developed as a mini coal depot.
I feel another pack of 1/108 wagons might be needed!
