Three wagon multi-pack, NER 4T Chaldron

Pack B: Hetton Colliery Railway - Three ex-NER P1 style Chaldrons in pre-1911 lettering. Built by George Stephenson, Hetton Colliery Railway celebrates its 200th anniversary in 2022, being the world’s first complete railway system that only utilised steam locomotives.

Containing three wagons, numbered:

  • 1518
  • 211
  • 1349

Each pack produced has been themed by colliery, and each waggon depicted is based on photographic evidence and reference to colliery records to confirm lettering styles. Some packs contain just one style of waggon, while others contain mixed styles where research has shown that they operated in conjunction with each other.

Specification List:

  • Die-cast metal chassis with plastic body. Weight of 9g unloaded.
  • Operates over minimum radius curves (371mm, 1st radius set-track)
  • Five different body designs, covering a time period from 1840 to 1978.
  • Three styles of wheel design; split spoke, star spoke and wave spoke, to a blackened 00 gauge RP25-88 profile.
  • Three styles of braking arrangement and brake handles, with different block types and the more complicated Londonderry clasp type brake.
  • Three arrangements of ‘bang-boards’.
  • Additional, removable ‘greedy boards’ (horizontal board extensions to the body) to the Shildon Works built Chaldron, giving an increased coal loading.
  • Scale width wire handrails, metal pin jaw coupling and wire/etch handbrake levers.
  • Eroded metal/plastic detail parts, including grab handles, door securing pins, chassis chain points and safety chains in metal.
  • Wagons connected via an all new link fine chain with Neodymium magnetic heads, connected at the wagon via prototypical cotter pin coupling.
  • Two extra NEM fitted magnetic couplings supplied with wagon packs to allow for fitting to locomotives and/or additional rolling stock.
  • Artwork features authentic colliery markings and numbers, accurate to time period modelled and based on actual photographic evidence where possible.
  • Additional research assistance provided by Beamish Living Museum, Bowes Railway and the North Eastern Railway Association.

Excellent addition to my layout

I've been very pleased with the Chaldron wagons I bought recently.
They are well made, have great detail and look really good in use.
The magnetic coupling works fine, most of the time, though I have had a couple of occasions when wagons have been left behind.
All in all a good purchase as far as I am concerned.

Hetton Colliery Chaldrons

These are delightful wagons and their size provides an excellent demonstration of the power/haulage capabilities of early steam locomotives. The amount of fine details that have been added despite their size is absolutely remarkable.

The coupling chains and tiny magnet couplers are an excellent visual design and allow for much more realistic start/stop shunting movement than most alternatives can offer. The chains are made out of steel to enable them to be blackened and also be strong enough to be functional.

Because steel is ferromagnetic the chains can have an unfortunate tendency to wrap around the magnetic couplers rather than simply hanging loosely. (Which occasionally necessitates ‘the hand of god’ unravelling them in order to allow coupling.) However this feels a minor & reasonable compromise to get such aesthetically pleasing & functionally delightful couplings.

Hetton Railway Chaldron

Neat little model. Good timing bringing it out in the same year as the 200th anniversary of the opening of the railway. Just a pity it is not yet available in 7mm

Coal wagons

I only can applaud the production of ERA1 rolling stock.
They look great, nice details, I do hope the sold out versions will come back in the Accurascale shop and that these models will be available as a standard item for a few years at least…
I also hope that Accurascale will produce even more types of early rolling stock in the future…
